What are the main characteristics of percale?

Is percale better than ordinary cotton?
“Cotton percale” describes the weave the cloth is made in, not the fibre. A cotton percale differs from standard cotton in its crossed structure, which gives it more firmness, more breathability and more durability. The final quality depends on the cotton used: long-staple fibre — Egyptian or Pima — produces the best percale.
Does percale crease a lot?
Percale creases more than sateen. The crossed weave that gives it firmness and coolness also makes it more prone to creasing after washing. Ironing restores the original matt appearance without difficulty. With continued use the cloth settles and the creasing reduces naturally, without affecting comfort.
How many threads should a good percale have?
High-quality percale sheets start at 200 threads per square inch. Thread count, though, is an indicative figure: the quality of the cotton — fibre length and the fineness of the yarn — is what really determines the result more precisely. That is why at Matarranz we always use extra-long-staple Egyptian cottons of up to 1000 threads.
Are percale sheets good for summer?
Yes. Percale is the most breathable of the cloths used in good sheets. Its crossed weave helps air circulate and body heat escape overnight, which gives that steady sensation of coolness. It suits warm climates, and anyone who sleeps hot.
