Bedspreads

Bedspreads in fine fabrics with timeless designs and high-quality finishes. Handcrafted in our own workshop.

The bedspread is the most visible piece on the bed during the day. Its fabric, its drape and its design determine the visual reading of the bedroom. A well-chosen bedspread adds comfort and a presence of its own, and keeps its look season after season. At Matarranz, we have selected and made bedspreads in natural fabrics since 1911.

High-Quality Bedspreads: Cotton, Linen and Natural Fibres

The fabric determines the feel, weight, drape and long-term performance of the bedspread. At Matarranz, we work with natural fibres, without synthetic blends.

Cotton Bedspreads: Waffle-Weave Texture, Durability and Easy Care

Cotton is the most versatile fabric for bedspreads. It withstands frequent washing without losing its shape, develops textured weaves — such as waffle weave or knit — that give it visual presence, and suits both contemporary bedrooms and more classic spaces. High-density cotton bedspreads keep their drape and volume with use, and offer the comfort needed for every season.

Linen Bedspreads: A Natural Drape and Timeless Design

Linen produces bedspreads with a fluid drape and a cool feel that improve with every wash. Its natural texture adds visual character to the bedroom without the need for additional elements. It is the most suitable fabric for bedrooms with an understated, timeless sense of style, and it pairs well with the rest of the high-quality cotton bed linen in the collection. Combining a linen bedspread with flat sheets in percale or sateen produces a set with real visual coherence.

Bedspreads by Season: Summer and Mid-Season

The weight and fabric of the bedspread determine its seasonal range. Choosing correctly lets you use the same bedspread for more months of the year and adapt the bedroom to each season without replacing pieces.

Summer Bedspreads: Light and Cool

Lightweight bedspreads in low-weight cotton or in linen are the choice for the warmer months. Their main function is to cover the bed with visual presence and add a minimal layer of warmth without generating heat. For bedrooms with air conditioning, a fine cotton bedspread can also be used as the only covering at night.

Mid-Season Bedspreads: Texture and Body

In spring and autumn, bedspreads with more body — heavier-weight cotton, textured weaves or jacquard fabric — offer the visual presence and the warmth needed for cooler nights. These are the bedspreads that can be used for the most months of the year without replacing, and they add the greatest comfort through the change of seasons.

Bedspread Sizes and How to Choose the Right Drop

The size of the bedspread determines how it falls over the sides of the bed. A bedspread that is too small does not cover the sides properly; one with too much drop trails on the floor. The recommended side drop is between 25 and 35 cm on each side.

  • 90 cm bed: approx. 160 x 240 cm bedspread.
  • 105 cm bed: approx. 175 x 240 cm bedspread.
  • 135 cm bed: approx. 200 x 240 cm bedspread.
  • 150 cm bed: approx. 220 x 240 cm bedspread. The most requested size.
  • 160 cm bed: approx. 230 x 240 cm bedspread.
  • 180 cm bed: approx. 260 x 240 cm bedspread.
  • 200 cm bed: 280 x 240 cm bedspread, or made to measure.

For non-standard bed dimensions, extra-deep mattresses or interior design projects with their own measurements, we make bedspreads to order in the same fabrics as the standard range.

How to Combine a Bedspread with Your Bed Linen

The bedspread works best over a base of bed linen in neutral tones. In bedrooms with fitted sheets and pillowcases in white or natural linen, a bedspread with texture — waffle weave, jacquard, knit — adds visual depth without breaking the overall look.

The bedspread can be laid out over the whole bed during the day, folded at the foot in the colder months when used together with a duvet, or used as the only covering in summer. For bedrooms where the character of the space is the main criterion, a bedspread with greater visual presence — a bolder tone, a textured weave — can be the piece that defines the bedroom.

Care and Maintenance of Bedspreads

  • Cotton bedspreads: wash at 40–60°C on a normal cycle. Dry flat or over a wide rail. Iron while still slightly damp, using steam if needed.
  • Linen bedspreads: wash at 40°C on a delicate cycle. Linen softens and gains drape with every wash. Dry while still slightly damp to reduce creasing.
  • Off-season storage: clean and dry, folded or rolled in a breathable fabric bag. Linen and cotton do not require special storage conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A bedspread is a piece of bed linen with body of its own — woven, textured or quilted — that is placed over the whole bed. A coverlet is a lighter, flatter piece whose main function is to cover and protect the duvet or sheets during the day. The difference lies in the thickness, the texture and the visual presence: the bedspread has more decorative character, while the coverlet is more functional.

For a 150 cm bed, we recommend a bedspread of approx. 220 x 240 cm, giving a side drop of around 35 cm on each side. If the mattress is particularly deep, or you prefer more drop, a 240 x 260 cm bedspread offers greater coverage. For exact measurements or special mattresses, we make to order.

For summer, bedspreads in linen or lightweight cotton are the most suitable: they weigh little, breathe well and cover the bed with visual presence without generating heat. In bedrooms with air conditioning, a fine cotton bedspread can also be used as a night-time covering.

Yes. We make bedspreads to measure for beds with non-standard dimensions and for interior design or hospitality projects with their own measurements. Embroidery or initials can also be added. The process includes selecting the fabric and confirming measurements before production. Please contact our team with any questions.
