Matarranz was founded as a textile shop specialising in fabrics and handkerchiefs. But that small dream grew over time. The expansion of its product range and a clear focus on home linens were decisive steps in becoming the current benchmark for home textile retail in Europe.

The story begins in 1911, when Ramiro Matarranz de Maetzu founded the company and opened his shop at the start of Calle Atocha, next to Madrid’s Plaza Mayor. In 1919, he expanded the business to Calle Gerona: fabrics, suits, handkerchiefs and textiles in general filled the shelves of that establishment.

With effort and dedication, the business spread to other well-known streets in Madrid, such as Gran Vía, Paseo de la Habana and Calle Serrano, where Matarranz settled in 1941 after converting a former workshop.

1911

The history of Matarranz began in the last century. In 1911, Ramiro — a young entrepreneur — opened a shop dedicated to the textile trade, but from the very beginning he brought his own distinctive touch. Even then, Matarranz was already making women’s garments: elegant designs that were turned into coats and jackets, always crafted with quality fabrics and care.

1940

How time flies! Three decades later, in the history of Matarranz, the business reached a very important chapter. It was time to make a decision, and the path seemed clear: specialising in high-quality home linen products. That decision proved to be a true success. Around this time, Matarranz also opened its own workshop, strengthening in-house production. In a short period, Matarranz positioned itself as a clear benchmark in the manufacture of these products, not only within the Spanish market and industry but also abroad.

1940s

Growth comes naturally, and Matarranz also expanded its business during these years. In 1944, it ceased to be a sole proprietorship and, while remaining a family-run company, became a corporation: “Matarranz y Cía S.R.C.”. Ramiro Matarranz de Maetzu handed over the management of the company to his sons, Julio and Ramiro, who played a key role in strengthening the company’s specialisation. This corporate structure is still in place today under the commercial brand “Matarranz Ropa de Casa”.

It was also in the mid-1940s that Matarranz established itself at 30 Calle Serrano in Madrid.

Today, it is the oldest shop on the street and remains faithful to its original façade. Entering this century-old store is like stepping back in time. The original floor is still preserved, as are the counter and tables.

In this establishment, learning about textiles and feeling the fabrics are all part of the experience.

1980

Seventy years later, a new chapter begins at Matarranz. The generational handover has come once again, and Miguel Ángel Matarranz, grandson of the founder, takes over the management of the company, driving the business and the brand forward and consolidating it beyond our borders.

2016

Only those who adapt move forward with confidence. Miguel knows this well — great-grandson of Ramiro and fourth generation of the Matarranz family — who in 2016 led the leap into new technologies and took on the challenge of adapting the business to the 21st century, to new forms of communication such as social media, as well as the challenge of connecting with new customers who value the importance of quality home linens.

Through its website, the Matarranz online shop opened this century-old business to the whole world for the first time, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
