- Fineness of the fibres: Yak down (the finest undercoat) typically falls within a micron range comparable to that of the finest cashmere. The finer the fibre, the less it stimulates the nerve endings in the skin, resulting in a softer, less itchy feel.
- Scales and natural crimp: The cuticle (surface) of yak fibre has very fine scales and a natural crimp, which enhances the flexibility of the yarn and reduces any itchy sensation against the skin.
- Low lanolin content and odour: Yak fibre contains very little residual grease, giving it a dry, soft feel that is never sticky.
- Yarn and fabric construction: Softness also depends on yarn twist, density and gauge. A well-twisted yarn and a dense construction help minimise loose fibre ends that may rub against the skin.
