The pillowcase and pillow sham are the pieces that most shape the bed’s first impression — and, of course, how comfortable it feels. At Matarranz, we have been making pillowcases and pillow shams in Egyptian cotton since 1911, in the same qualities as the rest of our bed linen.
Pillowcases in Egyptian Cotton Percale and Sateen
The whole collection is made from 100% extra-long-staple cotton, in different thread counts depending on the quality the customer prefers, always without synthetic blends. The weave determines the feel, temperature and wash performance. At Matarranz, we work with two main finishes for our pillowcases:
Egyptian Cotton Percale: Freshness and Durability
Percale is the reference fabric for anyone who sleeps hot or needs a pillowcase that withstands frequent washing without losing its shape. Its weave produces a firm, cool fabric with a smooth feel. It grows softer with every wash without losing structure. It is the standard choice in high-end hospitality textiles, thanks to its performance under repeated industrial laundering.
Egyptian Cotton Sateen: Silky Feel and Elegant Drape
Sateen offers a smoother surface and a subtle sheen. Its feel is more enveloping than percale, and its drape more fluid. It is particularly recommended for bed linen in high-end residential projects.
Pillow Shams to Dress the Bed
The pillow sham is the square or decorative cushion placed in front of the pillows. It is not a random extra: it is part of the bed’s visual composition, and its cover should be coordinated with the rest of the set in quality, colour and finish.
At Matarranz, we make pillow shams in standard and special sizes, although 60×60 cm is the most common.
The percale or Egyptian cotton sateen pillow sham is coordinated with the pillowcases in the same fabric, for visual consistency across every piece at the head of the bed.
Pillowcase Sizes: Standard and Special
At Matarranz, we make pillowcases in every standard size: 50×70, 50×80, 50×90 and 50×105 cm.
For mattresses with a topper, adjustable beds, or projects with their own dimensions, we make made-to-measure pillowcases in the same qualities as our standard range. Special sizes are also available for pillow shams outside the usual measurements.
Handcrafted Production and Personalisation: Finishes and Coordination with the Bed Set
Pillowcases and pillow shams are made in the same fabric, colour and weight as the fitted sheets, flat sheets and duvet covers from the same collection. The result is a bed dressed as a single, coherent whole, with no mismatched pieces breaking the ensemble.
For hospitality, interior design or private projects wishing to personalise their pieces, embroidery, initials or specific finishes can be added. The design is validated before the full run is produced.
How to Choose Between Percale and Sateen for Your Pillowcases
The choice between percale and sateen depends on three factors: the temperature of the bedroom, the feel you prefer, and the visual look you want for the bed.
- If you sleep hot, or your room holds heat: percale. Its weave breathes better and dries faster after washing.
- If you prioritise a soft feel and the look of the set: sateen. Its smoother surface and subtle sheen give the bed a different visual presence.
- For hotel use or frequent industrial laundering: percale. Greater resistance to repeated high-temperature washing.
- For high-end residential projects: higher-thread-count Egyptian cotton sateen, which combines durability with the feel a premium bedroom calls for.
In both cases, Egyptian cotton guarantees superior durability over standard cotton, thanks to its longer fibre.
