At Matarranz, we make bathrobes from high-weight Egyptian cotton, Hydrocotton and waffle-weave cotton. Our range includes wraparound styles for everyday use at home and lightweight styles for travel or summer, with or without a hood and available in different sizes. Personalisation is available with embroidered initials, names and logos. Since 1911, we have worked with private customers, hotels and exclusive accommodation, yachts and interior design projects. Stores in Madrid (21 Lagasca) and San Sebastián (20 San Marcial).
Bathrobes
Bathrobes in Egyptian cotton, Hydrocotton and waffle weave. High absorbency, softness and weights up to 600 gsm.
At Matarranz we make bathrobes in high-gsm Egyptian cotton, in Hydrocotton and in waffle weave. Enveloping models for daily use at home and light ones for travel and for summer, hooded and unhooded, in a range of sizes. Monogramming with initials, names or logos. We work with private clients, hotels and high-end accommodation, yachts and interior design projects, and have done since 1911. Shops in Madrid, Lagasca 21, and San Sebastián, San Marcial 20.
A good bathrobe carries the comfort of the bath or the shower on past the bathroom door. What separates a robe that lasts from one that loses its shape in the wash is the fibre, the weight and the making. We work in 100% cotton only — high-gsm Egyptian cotton, Hydrocotton and waffle weave.
Bathrobes in Egyptian Cotton Terry, Hydrocotton and Waffle
The material and the construction of the cloth decide everything that matters about a robe: the handle, the softness, the weight, the absorbency and how it behaves under frequent washing. We work with three.

Egyptian Cotton Bathrobe
Extra-long-staple Egyptian cotton spins into a denser terry, with a softer surface and greater absorbency. The long staple stands up to frequent washing without losing its structure or its loft, and the softness improves with each wash. It is the reference choice for anyone who wants an enveloping robe for daily use at home that will keep going.

Hydrocotton Bathrobe
Hydrocotton is a cotton construction with a more open terry structure, which produces a piece that is markedly plush, light for its weight, and highly absorbent. Our Hydrocotton bathrobe at 380 gsm has the loftiest handle in the collection without the weight a conventional terry of the same feel would carry.

Waffle Bathrobe
The waffle weave produces a flat surface with a honeycomb texture, lighter than conventional terry. A waffle robe dries faster, takes up less room and travels more easily. It is the one to take for summer, for travelling, for the pool, or for anyone who prefers a robe with no excess bulk and a different look to it.
Light or Enveloping: Choosing by Use
The choice between a light robe and a heavier one follows the climate, how often it will be worn and the kind of comfort you are after.
- Light — waffle or the finer models: less weight, quick drying, easy to store and to pack. Right for summer, travel, the pool, or a bathroom with poor ventilation.
- Mid-weight, 380–450 gsm: the balance between absorbency, lightness and an enveloping handle. The most adaptable for daily use at home in any season.
- High weight, 600 gsm: maximum density, a deep plush handle and real warmth. For winter, or for anyone who puts the sensation ahead of quick drying.
Weight is not the only criterion. The cloth chosen and the way it is made matter too.
Hooded or Unhooded
The hood is one of the things people decide on first. Having one or not changes the weight of the robe, how it looks and what it is for.

Hooded
A hood protects the hair after a shower and absorbs the water in it, adds warmth and makes the robe feel more enveloping. It earns its place after the pool, after the gym, or for a shower in a cold house. It also adds weight and bulk.

Unhooded
A robe without a hood has a cleaner, lighter line. It dries faster, sits more comfortably on anyone who does not need to cover their hair, and dates less. It is the usual choice in hospitality and for daily use at home.
Sizes and Uses: Bathrobes for Men, Women and Unisex
Matarranz bathrobes come in standard unisex sizes, cut to suit both men and women, and long enough for full cover after a bath.
For use at home, the heavier terry models give the most enveloping feel. For travel or the pool, waffle and the lighter weights are the practical ones. For projects with particular requirements — hotels and high-end accommodation, yachts and other interior design work — the same collection is available with the same guarantees. See our bed linen for hotels section, or bed linen for boats and yachts.
Monogrammed Bathrobes and Professional Projects
Every bathrobe can be embroidered with initials, names or logos. The work is done in our Madrid workshops, with a choice of thread colour and of position on the piece. It is asked for most often for wedding lists, personalised gifts, hotels and interior design projects.
For hospitality orders and residential projects that need consistent production across pieces and reordering without variation, the Matarranz team advises on the model, the weight and the finishes. Contact the team.
How to Wash and Care for a Bathrobe
- Follow the care label. Composition and weight determine the right temperature and programme.
- Wash before first use. This activates the cotton fibres and improves absorbency from the first wash, and removes the dressing left from manufacture.
- Fasten the belt before washing. This keeps it from tangling and pulling the robe out of shape.
- Egyptian cotton and Hydrocotton: 40°C maximum, on a long cycle, with a mild detergent and no enzymes.
- Waffle: 40°C maximum on a delicate programme.
- Go easy on the fabric conditioner. It reduces both the softness and the absorbency of cotton over time.
- Store completely dry. Damp storage is what causes smells and damages the cloth.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a terry bathrobe and a waffle one?
Cotton terry gives a plush, high-volume surface with real softness and absorbency. It is heavier and takes longer to dry. Waffle gives a flat surface with a distinctive texture, lighter, quicker to dry and less bulky to store. Terry suits daily use at home in winter; waffle suits summer, travel and the pool.
What is Hydrocotton, and what does it offer?
Hydrocotton is a cotton terry construction with a more open structure, which produces a piece that is markedly plush and light for its weight. Our Hydrocotton bathrobe at 380 gsm has the density and the handle of a high-weight terry at a lower relative weight. The cloth recovers its loft with each wash, and the softness improves with use.
What weight should a good bathrobe be?
It depends on the use and the climate. For daily use at home in winter, or for anyone who prefers an enveloping feel, 380 to 600 gsm gives the most density and comfort. For summer, travel or the pool, a weight under 380 gsm gives more lightness and faster drying. Weight is not the only factor: the cloth chosen and the way it is made will decide how it feels in use and how long it lasts.
Is a hooded or an unhooded bathrobe better?
It depends on the use. A hood protects the hair, adds warmth and is practical for the pool or the gym. An unhooded robe has a cleaner line, weighs less and dries faster. For daily use at home and for hospitality, the unhooded model is the more common. Beyond that it comes down to preference and to context.
Can you supply bathrobes for hotels or professional projects?
Yes. We work with hotels and high-end accommodation, yachts and other interior design projects that need bathrobes at specified weights, consistent across pieces and repeatable on reorder without variation. Logos, names or initials can be embroidered for projects with their own identity. For enquiries, contact the team.
